INDEPENDENT BOARD MEMBER

The Board of Management (Board)

The Board is responsible for ensuring constitutional compliance, the preparation and following of strategic direction, governance management, financial management and endorsement of appointments of committees, paid staff, and volunteer support.

Role of the Independent Members

  • There will be four (4) Independent Board Members
  • Each independent member will have at least one focus area, and the area(s) of focus will align with the following areas of the strategic plan: umpire recruitment and retention, women’s football, junior football, policy and future directions, events and financial matters and infrastructure and planning.
  • The independent members will represent the Board on the committees that align to the areas as described above and report recommendations back to the Board of Management.
  • The portfolios of the Independent Board Members will be:
  • Chairperson of the Board of Management, with additional committee foci
  • Vice Chairperson, with additional committee foci
  • Finance: responsible for the supervision of the financial affairs of the organisation
  • Operations: responsible for the supervision of the operational, secretarial, planning and legislative elements of the incorporation.

Responsibilities

  • Attend all Board Meetings
  • Chair negotiated committees.
  • Represent the allocated committees at Board Meetings
  • Work with the Operations Manager and Administrative Officer in conducting the League’s affairs and conducting meetings appropriately.
    • Review and update the strategic direction annually.
    • Monitor strategic performance against plans.
    • Ensure the development and delivery of an overarching business plan that aligns with the strategic direction.
    • Monitor financial performance monthly.
    • Ensure the League is structured in such a way that it’s vision and mission statement can be achieved.
    • Ensure there is financial accountability, a clear annual budget and that the business plan outlines ongoing financial sustainability.
    • Ensure employment of staff and placement of volunteers into the positions that are required in order to deliver on the League’s strategic plan and business plan.
    • Resolve disputes amongst member groups.
    • Support and hold accountable the appointments of the League across the football and administrative aspects (including the committees) of the League.
      • Ensure the League follows “good governance” principles and practices.

 Desired Skills

To be most effective board members should offer a broad range of skills, including:

  • Proven leadership skills with experience in conducting meetings.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking.
  • High level of communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Having financial literacy.
  • Having deep vertical expertise of the League.

Tenure

The tenure for the independent members is two (2) years.

Remuneration

  • Chairperson Honorarium $1000
  • Independent Board Member Honoraria $500
